'This is for my bullies!' We exclusively meet Victoria’s Secret’s first red-haired angel, Alexina Graham

In a world exclusive, GLAMOUR meets Victoria’s Secret's newest angel.

21 Mar 2019

is certainly not short of charisma. Within seconds of being in Alexina’s presence, you will be desperate to hit the club with her. Alexina’s personality is as flaming hot as her red hair.

This cocktail of sass has led to the 29-year-old Midlands gal achieving one of the rarest feats in modelling, she has been given her wings as an official Victoria’s Secret Angel. Some may walk in the show but only a handful of angels get their fully-fledged wings. In reaching this accolade, Alexina follows in the feathered and rhinestone footsteps of Gisele, Tyra Banks and Adriana Lima. Alexina’s IRL best pal, Barbara Palvin joins her as the Victoria’s Secret’s newest angels.

Here Alexina, (in a world exclusive!!!) talks powerfully about overcoming childhood bullying and just how much being a Victoria’s Secret angel means to her. Get ready because Alexina should come with finger-clicking emojis and this former dancer is certainly going to bring a touch of theatre to the Victoria’s Secret show 2019. Plus, she may now live in NYC but as we found out, you can take the girl out of the Midlands, but you can’t keep her away from her slice of home: PG Tips and her thick Nottinghamshire accent is still in full flow. What. A. Girl...

“I found out I was going to officially become a Victoria’s Secret Angel when I was at dinner with my best friend…

It’s very exciting! It still feels so surreal to be honest, I have been working so hard to get to this moment – it’s a real mixture of feeling emotional, nervous and excited! I found out when I was having dinner with one of my best friends, just in a restaurant in Soho, New York. My agent sent me a screenshot of an email saying, ‘you are joining the VS family in 2019!’ So, I called her thinking she was joking, and she said, ‘no it’s true!’ So, me and my friend just got champagne – it was such a great way to find out! We kept it chic though, darling!

“It means so much to me to be the red-haired VS Angel, it come with a lot of empowerment…

Being a Victoria’s Secret’s Angel comes with a lot of empowerment. I think for me being a red head VS Angel means I get to put red heads out there more. Being an angel is part of having that media outreach so that I can say to young red head kids, ‘you can do anything you want! Nothing is impossible!’

“This is a ‘two fingers up at my bullies’ moment…

Like most red heads I did get bullied at school because we just stand out. I was this skinny little, geeky thing with no boobs but now I have embraced it as a woman. Having red hair is now a powerful part of my identity. It took me a long time to get here, I have gone through so much in the last ten years both in terms of my career and my life. Even 5/6 years ago I was talking to my Mum saying, ‘I might leave modelling behind.’ But she was the one who told me, ‘keep going, I know something is going to happen for you,’ and now knowing I have this platform and I can be a role model to red haired children is amazing. When I first did the Victoria’s Secret show in Shanghai and I was the first red haired girl to walk in the show since Karen Elson in 2009, I had so many messages from children and one woman said, ‘my child got bullied at school today and I showed her your Instagram to prove that the bullying doesn’t mean anything and you can achieve whatever you put your mind to!’ That meant so much to me.

“Ballet built up my confidence as a child…

I trained in Ballet and theatre for 12 years. I started ballet when I was 6 and it really had a massive effect on my confidence – it made a more confident person! It made me into the woman I am today.

“My message to any red-haired girl suffering from bullying is…

Be confident. Don’t listen to what anyone has to say about you. Be a powerful woman or man, no matter what! I would also say be kind to people always because you never know where they are going to end up or where they are ganna be. Smile at people and kill them with kindness!

“I danced my way through my first Victoria’s Secret casing…

Honestly, I was really nervous, and I just danced a lot during the casting. I talked a lot too, like I do all the time in everyday life! That’s part of my power as a woman to be honest and I think that’s why I stood out.

“Looking at the Victoria’s Secret runway I feel so inspired by the women…

It would have helped so much to see myself reflected back on the Victoria’s Secret runway growing up. Even looking at the runway now, as an adult I feel so inspired by the women, I have been watching the show online since I was 16 years old. Adriana Lima has been such a great inspiration for me, she’s got a family, she’s mother, a model and she’s just kept on going for so many years. I love Candice too, she’s so down to earth and I mean her body is amazing!

“I remember walking into the first rehearsal thinking, ‘oh my god if they don’t talk to me, what am I going to do?’….

Honestly, it’s family! I first saw that on my first show because I was really nervous, I didn’t really know many of the girls. I remember walking into the first rehearsal thinking, ‘oh my god if they don’t talk to me, what am I going to do?’ But everyone was friendly because everyone has pushed themselves so hard to get to that moment. We have been through the same experiences so its family!

“My peak angels moment was…

I was in the last fitting and Sophia (Neophitou), the VS stylist, got me the parachute wings and I literally started crying! I kept asking, ‘are you sure!’ They were so heavy, and I kept just thinking in my head, ‘ok, work it, work it, work it!’ When I got to the end of the runway, I kept telling myself, ‘ok, now, just look cool, look cool, look cool!’

My PG Tips obsession is the most British thing about me…

People never think I am British – but I am born and bred! PG tips is the most British thing about me. When I go home, I literally have 6 cups a day. It just doesn’t taste the same in New York, you can’t get the same right type of milk! A cup of tea solves everything, if you are happy have a cup of tea, if you are feeling sad have a cup of tea!

My top Victoria’s Secret underwear picks are…

“I love the because it’s super comfortable and the logo straps are really fun to show off under a tank.is great to wear with high-waisted jeans and a blazer. It’s an effortless way to go from innerwear to outwear, and it’s very feminine. The gives me the perfect lift, and the floral print is great for spring. I also love & set because it’s super cute and lightweight, and you can also wear the cami out with jeans!”
