The BAFTAs are the most fabulous AF night in the British film calendar and last night’s ceremony did not disappoint. For the occasion we got my best investigative journalist game on to bring you all the behind the scenes action and most importantly the beauty hacks that will sprinkle some pizazz into your life.
From Bradley Cooper and GLAMOUR’s February cover star, Irina Shayk to the iconic Glenn Close, Cate Blanchettand Lily Collins (who bought ALL the fashion game), the a-list certainly bought their best BAFTA game!
Ahead of the event we skipped off to the Nominees suite. In the boujiest hair salon known to man, took some time out from doing Rami Malek’s hair –BAFTA leading actor nominee – to talk me through the secrets of a celebrity hair dresser.
It turns out every good celebrity hair stylist needs to double up as a therapist. “When I went to the Oscars to do Sam Smith’s hair when he won, people said to him, ‘your hair is so short, why do you need to fly in a hair dresser?’” Sam’s answer? “He keeps me calm.”
At the Lancôme suite the top makeup artists revealed it’s all about skin care RN, “there is no point trying to do makeup on rubbish skin. Most people now want a realness to the skin – the red carpet is all about keeping it natural now. Covered and perfected but real.”
In a pure revelation they also revealed facial prep is even more important than your actual make-up, “eye matches, face masks, a jade roller – anything you can do to help re-plump the skin is so important. It’s good to do that in the morning so it’s your skin isn’t too rich in product when you come to apply your actual make up. You don’t want too much texture in the skin. I really recommend the (micellaire water) – use it on your face and lips to remove any dry skin – it’s better than a scrub. Don’t use a moisturizer as it’s too much product and your make up will not hold as well.”
The hero skin care products the a-list can’t get enough of? “Sheet mask wise I really recommend the .” At £17 a piece, we will see you in the queue. But you can never underestimate the power of a jolly good lip balm. The unsung hero? “m.” And trust me, after trying it my lips have NEVER felt better.
Later at Swarovski’s panel talk with all the Best Costume Design nominees, industry legend, Sandy Powell – who is actually nominated TWICE this year for her work on Mary Poppins Returns and awards season front runner, The Favourite – revealed the best costume designers also have to act like an emotional support to actors. “It’s such an intimate experience with the actors, you do actually end up being their support – that’s part of the job!”
Catching up with Alexandra Byrne who magically transformed Margot Robbie into Elizabeth I for Mary Queen of Scotts revealed it takes 8 meters of lace to make a ruff, most of the costumes were actually made of denim (who knew!) and her design inspiration for the character was, “it’s like she has a Net-a-porter approach to dressing and buying clothes.” Good to know the Tudors had a shopping addiction too.
To really make sure I was living my best a-list life, I stayed at – only a short trip away from the BAFTA location, The Royal Albert Hall. The vibe? Sexy with a side helping of sultry. It’s the perfect secret spot to get your BAFTA on, Blake’s is a hidden gem amongst the historic London borough of Kensington. Rooms start at £340 for a Luxury Double and £600 for a Signature Suite.
Skipping off to the red carpet in the Audi Q8 - the car which transported all the a-listers - we mingled with Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett who has gone BRUNETTE. We are shook. Inside the glittering ceremony Olivia Colman took the leading actress award saying, "we are going to get so pissed!" That's our kind of girl.
Post ceremony we attended the dinner party to end all dinner parties. So much so, Taylor Swiftwas there! Attending with her boyfriend Joe Alywn who starred in The Favourite which swept to 7 BAFTA wins, Taylor left with the plastic rabbits which decorated the tables. The Duchess of Cambridge in other news, did not.
We all love a souvenir - even Taylor Swift.
