Glitter has been a huge trend backstage at fashion week for years. It's been on eyelids and cheeks and lips. Hey, it's even been blown all over the place (see last season's Preen show). But if New York Fashion Week is anything to go by, glitter has some strong competition in the form of foils.
The metallic trend is a more edgy, sophisticated take on the sparkling look and was first seen backstage at Jeremy Scott, where makeup pro, Kabuki, applied it to the models' lips.
"The collection is inspired by Jeremy and his old polaroids of himself. At that time, he would do his makeup all crazy and using his fingers to apply it, just expressing himself in a fun, bold way," said Kabuki.
Whereas our glitter obsession has spread across all colours of the rainbow, the foil trend is set to be slightly more understated. "We chose a natural cosmetics colour, rather than a blue or green, so that gives the look a sophisticated twist, especially since the texture of it is so exaggerated."
For anyone keen to recreate the look at-home, there are a few application tricks Kabuki shared with GLAMOUR backstage. Firstly, outline your lips in a natural lip liner; "You need to define the area in order to get the right shape," he advises.
Secondly, use a clear eyelash glue to get the foil to adhere. This way, the glue will dry totally invisible and it won't interrupt the impact of the foil. Next, press the foil in with a powder puff and tidy up any hard-to-reach areas with a little makeup. "We used to retouch the corners of the lips, and any area where it was harder to get the foil to adhere. It's an exact colour match to the foil we used."
We're into it.
