These were Google's most popular beauty trends and products of the year

They're the beauty trends that made it into Google's top 10 search list and we can't get enough...

12 Dec 2018

2018 has been quite a year for beauty. We’ve been through thick and thin with our brows whilst skin trends continued to move from the sublime to the surreal (‘dewy dumpling’ anyone?) and that’s before we even started slathering on the CBD oils.

And let's not forget the hotly anticipated launches that got everyone in a lather; we saw the opening of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop pop-up shop whilst her good friend Gucci Westman (who also did her wedding makeup) finally brought her much-lauded Westman Atelier makeup brand to the market.

But in terms of what people were actually searching for, the results may just surprise you.

According to Google’s 2018 Year In Search, the prize for the top trending beauty query went to Filorga’s Time-Filler Eyes Absolute Eye Correction Cream, fuelled, apparently, by the eye cream's inclusion in the M&S Beauty Advent Calendar.

So what’s the skin-ny? Favourite of derms (the brand started life producing skincare for professional use) and beauty editors alike, this results-driven French skincare line is serious about ingredients. In terms of the Time-Filler Eyes which shot to the top of the list at the beginning of the year, its potent cocktail of active ingredients is designed to tackle all your eye woes in one hit from dark circles and fine lines to sagging skin and even lash growth. No wonder it proved so popular with a nation that's chronically tired according to various studies.

The next contender in the search charts is perhaps less of a surprise and GHD continues its reign on the best-sellers list remaining the undisputed king of smooth (or curls for that matter if you ever managed to master the ‘curling with an iron’ technique).

Then there are the social media favourites; Huda Beauty, Urban Decay and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty which are always guaranteed Insta fodder. But there were also a couple of surprise viral hits in there too; Makeup Revolution’s £4 concealer showed that budget beauty coupled with efficacious formulas really is a winning combo. Meanwhile for hair ‘Rose Brown’ was the pastel hair colour trend of 2018 that brunettes could actually get on board with proving that pink, in all its guises is going nowhere.

Meanwhile, the other skincare contender on the list showed that you guys are getting skin savvy as ‘Retinol Cream’ made it to number 5. Known as the ‘gold standard’ in anti-ageing, this wrinkle-slaying skin hero may be having a moment thanks to single-ingredient brands such as The Ordinary bringing derm-grade actives to the mainstream. But it also goes to show that knowledge is power when it comes to getting the most out of your beauty products.
