US retailer Target always nails it when it comes to designer collaborations - their last, with Peter Pilotto that was also available on Net-A-Porter, sold out almost immediately. Next up they've picked fashion darling Joseph Altuzarra to do a collaboration - a designer that's beloved by Michelle Obama, Julianne Moore, Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o, and is a major figure on the New York Fashion scene as well as the red carpet. We sat down with Joseph to chat about his decision to do a lower-priced clothing line, how "nonchalence" is sexy, and whether he'd do a bridal line...
What made you consider doing a lower-priced collaboration?
Altuzarra is growing in important and exciting ways and Target felt like the right partner.
Target is a leader when it comes to designer collaborations, so it was an easy decision for us to make when they approached us about the project.
What was the biggest challenge in designing the collaboration?
Ensuring it had its own narrative as well as staying true to the Altuzarra aesthetic.
Do you feel the pressure to be an instant sell-out - like other brands they've collaborated with?
Our focus has been on creating a desirable collection which will appeal to Target customers as well as fans of the Altuzarra brand alike.
What's your favourite piece in the collection?
I'll pick two. I love the trench coat - I think it's a signature piece for us, and I also love the python print Romanian blouse - I think it's so beautifully done.
Featuring the range on NET-A-PORTER.COM makes this available to women around the world - was it important to reach beyond a US audience for you?
Yes, definitely. It's the right time for our brand to reach a wider audience and NET-A-PORTER.COM has been a very supportive partner for a long time.
What are you not designing yet that you would love to do in the future?
We are currently working on expanding our product offerings, including a handbag collection amongst other items.
You have a lot of celebrity fans - who would you like to dress on the red carpet (who you haven't already?)
I'm interested in women such as Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer.
Your clothes are always so effortlessly sexy - who do you think embodies that aesthetic right now?
Women who have that certain sense of nonchalance about them.
Why do you think your clothes are so appealing to women?
I like to think that women can embrace their confidence, beauty and sense of sexiness and seductiveness.
Would you ever show in London at Fashion Week?
No plans for LFW at the moment, NYFW is home.
How has winning the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award changed things for you?
It has been a humbling experience to receive recognition from the industry. It is still slowly sinking in.
What is the biggest myth about the fashion industry?
That it's catty - I've come to work with the most friendly and supportive network.
You're about to get married! Has wedding planning made you consider doing some sort of wedding line?
Not at the moment.
Joseph Altuzarra for Target is available on from Sunday 15 September.
