This is why Liz Earle's Cleanse & Polish is the undefeated hot cloth face wash that the world can't get enough of

A facial without the price tag...

If a cleanser is selling at a rate of one bottle every 17 seconds, we're here for it.

But, what is it about Liz Earle's Cleanse & Polish face wash that has A-listers, beauty editors and just about everyone else we know going back for more. And more. (And more?)

Given the saturated nature of the cleanser market, which boasts a near unlimited supply of makeup removers from hundreds of thousands of brands – and the breakneck speed at which products are introduced, worshipped and them promptly discarded for the next best thing, it takes something remarkable to grab our attention. It takes something near miraculous to keep it.

Created in 1995 and released as part of Liz Earle's original line-up of four hero skin saviours, we've grown up with the little green bottle of skin goodness – in fact, it's probably older than some of the people reading this. And in that time, despite not changing much – no new "wonder"" ingredient, no millennial pink packaging and no bright, young thing fronting the brand – it's continued to hold onto its position as a top seller.

So what makes it a winning formula? Good try. You'll never get the exact recipe out of them. But, it's a closely guarded blend of cocoa butter (to soften, smooth and moisturise) alongside rosemary, chamomile and eucalyptus (to tone, soothe and purify). It's magic touch? The ability to remove daily grime, pollutants, makeup and even stubborn mascara, while leaving skin comfortable, balanced and "exceptionally clean".

The scent instantly transforms your bathroom into a spa. The creamy formula glides on like silk, and creates a lather as you work it into the skin. Once all traces of makeup and dirt are lifted, massage it away with a warm cloth. The cotton texture gently removes all residue and leaves your face feeling fresh and instantly revived. Bonus: the cloth is machine washable, so you can use it again and again (which gives it extra sustainability kudos over face wipes).

This potent cocktail of botanical plant actives left our complexion radiant, since it gently exfoliates and stimulates circulation for clearer, sparkling skin. It's ideal for stressed and blemish-prone skin, but we've found those with normal and combination skin love it too.

It's even got celebs like Holly Willougby and Poppy Delevingne hooked, with both stars revealing it's their go-to face wash."I wash my face day and night with it", says Poppy, while Holly says she's used it for years and loves it because it "really suits her skin."

And, if you love the formula but fancy a bit of a shake-up, you can pick up the cult cleanser in new scents like Rose & Lavender, £19.

You don't have to limit the love just to your face either. The skin Gods have been shining down, since the peeps at Liz Earle have extended the nourishing formula into a body wash, £19, that you can use in the shower, too. Complete with a gentle mitt, it'll leave limbs suitably soft and ready for summer.
