Mollie King is the kind of girl you just want to be best friends with, get down low in the club with and just well, have a jolly good natter about lads with. Given her personality, it’s no great surprise that the former The Saturdays star has transitioned from music to presenting, hosting a new Radio 1 show alongside Matt Edmonson.
Her enthusiasm for the new gig is infectious, “I am literally 110 percent excited about the show! It literally feels like a dream job. I never thought I would find a job that I loved as much as I loved singing! We just laugh all the time. I just constantly have the feeling that my cheeks hurt!”
However, as we all know, Mollie doesn’t just have a face for radio, and here the former Strictly Come Dancing star opens up about her beauty secrets from her PMA over those ‘down days’ to her £2.99 go-to beauty product…
"I think we all stand in front of the mirror and just tear ourselves apart…"
I definitely have down days. You really have to focus on the parts of yourself that you don’t hate. Everyone is going to have positives, and everyone is going to have negatives. I really think you should try to focus on the positives otherwise you can really beat yourself up about things that other people probably aren’t even noticing. I think we all stand in front of the mirror and just tear ourselves apart, but we should focus on the things that are really shining through – not even the surfaces things, the things that make you the person you are.
It’s good to speak to people about it because you realise that so many people have the same hang-ups and the same insecurities. I know that if I speak to one of my girlfriends and I say, ‘I don’t feel as comfortable in super short, shorts as I used to a couple of years ago,’ so many people say, ‘oh my god I feel exactly the same.’ Or they will say, ‘I feel great about my legs, but my tummy is not as toned as it used to be!’ Or, ‘my skin – it's aged!’ Talking makes you realise it is normal to feel like this.
"I wouldn’t go bare faced for radio"
Outfit-wise, I completely dress down with trainers, baggy jeans and a baggy T-shirt – just really chilled. But makeup-wise, I’ve still got to wear a little bit because there is loads of video and social media content. But to be honest, I keep it very laidback, very stripped back but I have a little bit on to cover the bags under the eyes – it's got to be done!
"Putting a bit of a 'face on' gets me in the zone"
Trust me, there’s nothing I love more than having a day off where I’m completely bare-faced, I’ve got my hair in a top knot and I’ve got lots of moisturiser and sun cream on. But if I am going to do a job and I’ve got something to achieve, then I feel like I need a little bit of a face on, just to get into that role.
"I have SO many beauty regrets!"
When I look back at photographs of me in The Saturdays I think, ‘okay, it looks really heavy, but trends change so quickly!’ Being in a girl band, you HAVE to make sure that makeup is going to stay on. Now I am more into a laid-back look and ensure you can ACTUALLY see my natural skin underneath my foundation! You don’t want to look like a doll, you want to highlight your natural skin. There are also so many hairstyles from in the band that I look back on and I think, ‘oh my god Molly, your hair was just so overdone – what were you thinking?’ But you live, and you learn don’t you?!
"My current beauty secret obsession is…"
Recently, it's been putting on corner lashes. Over the last few years, I haven’t worn lashes at all but with Radio One, you don’t really need to have the full-face on. So, I realised that if I put these corner lashes on, it means I don’t have to go to town with the rest of the face. I leave everything else really natural and dewy. The lashes make me feel like I’ve got something on and then I don’t have to waste my time with something like eyeshadow, or liner!
False eyelashes that will make your heart (and eyes) flutter
"The best piece of beauty advice I have ever been given…"
If you're trying on a foundation, never try and colour match it on your hand. You’ve got to try it on your actual face because the difference in colour between your face, hand and even your neck is so different. Also, something I’ve only really been doing for the past couple of months is just ALWAYS putting on SPF. It can take up to twenty years for any of the damage to come through, so you’ve got to act on it now!
"I wish I looked like Ariana Grande whilst spinning!"
I try to go to the gym maybe twice a week and I try to also fit in Reformer Pilates, too. I think it’s good to workout maybe four to five times a week but varying the workout really is the key, otherwise it just gets SO boring doing the same thing all the time and it's hard to motivate yourself. I really want to get into spinning classes and go for that Ariana Grande hair whipping vibe! That would be very far from what I was actually looked like spinning, but it would be my inspiration.
"A lot of the make-up that I use is very affordable"
I love using the Maybelline Baby Lips (£2.99) as a lip balm. I also love the Maybelline mascaras. To be honest, if you're looking for a place to save the pennies, I think the place to save it is actually the blushers. I think with things like foundation, it is worth spending a bit more because it’s the first thing you see – whereas with blushers, you can get away with being a bit more cheap and cheerful.
"Filters are giving us a warped version of beauty"
I think that there’s positives and there’s negatives to how social media has affected beauty. Positively, there is SO much inspiration out there and you can really follow makeup trends and hair trends on Instagram. But with filters, we all now know how to make ourselves look different. Filters can hide a lot and it's easy to get caught up thinking, ‘oh my god, everyone’s skin is flawless!’ But you have to take it with a pinch of salt.
"I am obsessed with following Victoria Beckham on Instagram"
I love Victoria Beckham! I think she is amazing and I love it when she does makeup tutorials because I always want to know what she’s doing because her skin always looks SO glossy and dewy.
