She's famous for her no-nonsense, feisty attitude but Nicki Minaj shows off her softer side in a new documentary.

She explained that her abrasive nature is a result of her traumatic childhood.

She said although the trauma made her vow to never to let a man do the same to her, she too became a domestic abuse victim as an adult.

Nicki shared two teasers on Instagram from her forthcoming Making of Queen documentary showing her getting emotional as she recalled her upbringing.

She said: "I remember when my mother would let my father be violent with her and she always brings up this story about when I was a little girl and I would stand in front of my mother [with my arms open].

"That’s why maybe some people would describe me as abrasive or bitchy or whatever because I vowed from that age no man would ever abuse me, call me out my name, treat me like that," she added as she began to tear up. "Then all of a sudden, that was my life."

In the second clip, the 35-year old star fought back tears as she talked about how the violent experiences from her father and an unnamed abuser left her with very little confidence to make music.

"Who was I going to inspire when I had nothing in me to give? I let one human being make me so low that I didn’t even remember who I was. I was scared to get in the studio. I didn’t believe in myself."

Nicki found the strength to move on when she moved to Florida.

"All of a sudden, in Miami, I started catching a vibe as soon as I went to Miami," she confessed. "As soon as I changed locations, I started catching a vibe, and then one day, I got the vibe it’s time to go to New York."

Nicki moved to Miami and later New York to make the records Coco Chanel and Good Form.

Nicki opened up for the first time about her dad, Robert Maraj's threats towards her mother Nina in 2012.

Describing him as a "drug addict and alcoholic" on ABC’s Nightline show, Nicki said he once even burned down their house.

She explained: "I wanted to kill [my dad]. I used to wish he was dead.

"We were afraid for my mother’s life because whenever he would have a real bad outburst he would threaten to kill her."

It's not known when the documentary will be released. The clips dropped less than a month after Nicki had an altercation with Cardi B at a VIP party during New York Fashion Week.

The fight was witnessed by countless guests and filmed on a mobile phone. Cardi was alleged to have thrown a shoe at Nicki before leaving the party with a bump on her head.
