I tried the at-home workout that David Beckham, Kate Hudson and Michelle Obama love, and I’m fully converted

On your bike!

If, like me, you are a slight fitness-phobe, the words 'at-home workout' will be music to your ears. Peloton is the fitness equipment I never knew I needed, bringing every motivational aspect of the gym to the privacy of your own home.

Here's exactly why we'll all be mad for Peloton when it arrives in the UK.

What is a Peloton bike

Peloton is an at-home exercise bike unlike any other, serving you a genuinely engaging and immersive indoor cycling studio with the latest technology. Special cleated shoes at the ready, clip yourself in, because this is one wild ride you'll want to do again and again.

Self-motivation can be difficult at home, but Peloton solves this with its in-built 21.5 inch HD screen that not only tracks your vitals but also serves up 14 daily live spin classes right in your very home.

Using only the best of the best spin instructors, Peloton run organised classes in their New York studio (soon to also be a UK feature), that you can tune into live and take part in from the comfort of your own living room.

With over 10,000 previous classes stored, you can filter by music, instructor, difficulty and more, finding the perfect workout for you. If you're feeling competitive, you can see how your performance tracks against everyone else who's taking part or has completed the class (even filtering by age, identified gender and location), and see how you measure up.

Unlike other exercise bikes, it's also totally and completely silent - meaning you can pedal away frantically without your flatmates getting angry at you.

The US Peloton community is now nearly 1 million strong, and there are over a million rides taken every month!

What does Peloton do?

Boasting instructors who have become celebrities in their own right, Peloton offers an extremely wide variety of classes that will get you whipped into shape.

Jamie Luis, Health & Fitness Manager at DW Fitness First Angel says "Spinning is a great form of resisted cardio training, which works on endurance, HIIT and power elements throughout the class. It's not only a fantastic calorie burner but it also improves your cardiovascular fitness levels."

There's cardio, there's muscle-building and there's toning to boot. Each time you stand up, you'll be working your core as well.

The full unlimited subscription offers up different classes 'beyond the ride' including stretching and yoga to help keep you nimble and in great shape.

If you're looking for a full body work-out, spin classes have got it all.

Peloton bike review

I had the great pleasure of trying out a Peleton for myself, in the most stunning penthouse apartment in Old Street, fully inhabiting the life of a luxe fitness fanatic.

As I donned my rainbow Peloton sports bra (the chic branding even translates to fashionable gym wear, you know that's a good sign), and strapped on my shoes, I have to admit I was getting a bit nervous. Spin classes where my resistance is actually measured against other people on a live leaderboard is not normally my go-to feel-good workout, but I was open-minded (and promised fun R'n'B soundtracks).

With an in-person intro to getting started from International Managing Director Kevin Cornils, I selected my workout based on instructor and music style, and was recommended to try Cody. His style is very enthusiastic, not too slave-driver commanding, and as an ex-dancer he and I are right in sync. The warm-up eased me into what became a genuinely enjoyable class. Cue 30 minutes of me working out to Whitney Houston, sweating my heart out in the most beautiful apartment ever.

I filtered my competitors by female and my age group, but rapidly returned it to the full leaderboard. I was tempted to hide it, but there's no judgement here - it was great to see the averages of other users to know whether I was putting enough welly into it.

With handy phone, water and towel holders, I could grab everything I needed easily. I even sent an in-ride Instagram story of myself sweating my fake tan off to those who refused to believe I was spending an evening spinning alone in a dream apartment.

Thanks to the over-ear headphones, I was fully immersed. I literally felt as if Cody was in the room, cheering me on with his energy, guiding me toward an alternative (hopefully) future universe where I am super toned and fit.

When I was finished, I got immense satisfaction from a non-public shower and my own clothes being only metres away. It's not for everyone, but for me there's so much to be said for at-home exercise in terms of time-saving, privacy and commitment.

I love that Peloton offered so much variety. Feeling angry? Workout to some rock. In the mood for hard-core cardio? They've got the answer, and probably 4 instructors to cater for it.

When is Peloton coming to the UK?
