Body-proofing, the fast 800 and the Dubrow Diet may have been touted as the trendiest ways to lose weight this year but the world's most successful stars have been quietly championing another wellness plan.
Karlie Kloss, Theresa May, Samantha Cameron and Suki Waterhouse are all advocates of the Mayr cure – an intense 7-day detox programme designed to purge the body of toxins and leave guests feeling toned, vibrant and full of energy.
Developed by Franz Xavier Mayr in Austria during the early 20th century, the programme focuses on four basic principles: Rest, Cleansing, Training and Supplementing.
The philosophy of the Mayr cure is that health and the immune system originates in the gut and Franz Xavier Mayr was onto this premise long before all the trendy gut-boosting brands you’ll find in your local Whole Foods.
Detoxification is at the heart of every programme, with an emphasis on rest, strict cleansing of the digestive system and re-education of eating habits (e.g. chewing your food around 60 times per bite to encourage proper digestion – yes, really).
While the world's A-listers decamp to , if you can't afford to shell out £4,000, you can employ the basic principles at home. Here are the key principles to adhere to for a celebrity-approved wellness regime at a fraction of the cost...
The morning rituals
Early to rise, early to bed. Set your alarm pre-7am and wash down a teaspoon of Epsom salts () with warm water. A glorified laxative, the salts shift the tough, sticky toxins from the stomach and liver bile tract and flush them out of the body. Prepare to spend a good 15 minutes on the toilet.
Next, follow the daily shower ritual, which consists of a dry body brushing session and hot-cold-hot-cold shower to boost circulation and kickstart the detoxification process.

Then carry out the oil pulling ritual, which promotes the elimination of toxins.
Eat breakfast like a King and dinner like a pauper
The stomach is most active between 7am-9am so ensure you kickstart the day with a hearty breakfast. The Mayr cure recommends warm quinoa porridge, vegetable soup, potatoes with linseed oil and fresh herbs as brilliant ways to start your day.
For lunch and dinner, food combining is essential for better digestion: combining protein and fat prevents weight gain, whereas carbohydrates and fat eaten together will cause weight gain. Alkaline soups or vegetables with fish / meat or carbs are a good option for a midday meal.
As for dinner, the experts say a light vegetable soup or broth are top choices. They recommend plumping for warm food, because it is easier to digest, and totally avoiding carbs, nuts, raw fruit and vegetables.
Chew, chew, chew
One of the Mayr Cure's key principles is chewing food between 40-60 times via small bites. Chewing increases the surface area of your food so the digestive enzymes in the saliva can break down the food particles much more efficiently, leading to enhanced digestion. "Salivate properly and eat slowly," they say. "If we support our digestion, we are satisfied with less food and we therefore eat less."
Make cold-pressed oils your BFF
The Mayr Cure promotes the use cold-pressed oils at every meal. They say you should plump for linseed oil and always store it in the fridge to preserve its nutrients.
