This month, Diipa is sharing the story of her battle with acne, how she overcame the condition, and the skincare routine she swears by for a radiant complexion. As the video below attests, she's totally cleared up her skin with her routine.

Over the past years I have received countless amounts of beauty and fashion-related questions from my followers. One of the most frequently asked questions, by far, has to be about my skin and more specifically about how I got rid of my acne. Believe it or not, up until a few years ago my face was covered in very severe acne. This has always been a very difficult topic for me to open up about, but as I’ve grown older, and my platform has grown bigger, I am happy and more confident to share my story and experiences with other people to help them tackle their battle with acne.

As a teenager, I started developing a mild form of acne. My mum shared with me that she experienced acne as a teenager as well, and that it must be down to genetics. Soon enough I would grow out of it, right? It definitely did affect me during my time in high school, but I kept on convincing myself it would fade away eventually.

By the time I was 23 years old, I had tried every remedy imaginable to get rid of my acne. Healthy and clean eating, antibiotics, natural remedies, random light therapies, you name it, I tried it. Absolutely nothing was working for me. On top of this, my modelling and fashion blogging was getting more and more busy, and I was being photographed on a regular basis with very heavy makeup. If anything, my acne was getting worse.

The worsening acne was making me desperate to find a solution to get rid of it. My self confidence was at an all-time low. I didn’t want to go out and meet with people anymore and was even considering giving up my modelling and blogging career. If it wasn’t for the constant and unconditional support from my family, I probably would have.

One night when I couldn’t fall asleep, I read an article about a drug called Roaccutane. I started researching it and found out that many people suffering from severe acne had benefited from it greatly. I also read lots of bad experiences as well. My mom, who is also a doctor, suggested I go visit a dermatologist in London to further discuss it. The following day I met with one of the best dermatologists in London, Dr. Friedmann of the Harley Street Dermatology Clinic. We discussed my acne at length and he did not hesitate when prescribing me to Roaccutane. I started it on that very same day and 4-5 months later, on the last day of the treatment, I was completely acne free for the first time since being a teenager. It completely changed my life, for the better! Apart from some scarring my skin was completely free of acne.

The past months I have been visiting the PHI Clinic in London to treat my acne scarring. Their Ultraformer treatment has helped reduce the scarring a lot. Also, one of my secrets to maintain clear skin and reduce the scarring is a good skincare routine that I’ve learned from the experts in the industry over the years. I use a retinol based product every evening (my favorite is the Retinol Oil by 111 Skin https://111skin.com/products/celestial-black-diamond-retinol-oil). Every morning I use a moisturizer with Vitamin C. The Clinique range with fresh pressed Vitamin C is my favourite. Using Retinol on my skin in the morning and a Vitamin C based product in the morning has worked absolute wonders for my skin.

The most important thing I want to share about my acne journey does not have anything do with drugs, fancy treatments and skincare products, though.

Never judge or discourage anyone by the way they look. You never know what somebody is going through, what they’ve dealt with, what adversities they’ve overcome, or what their insecurities are. Life is hard and people can be mean. I experienced this during my time at high school, and later on in life, on a much bigger scale on my social media platform.

I’m telling you from my experience: do not let it define you. Let it shape you to become a stronger and better person! If you are dealing with acne: please do not lose hope. There are lots of options out there. Lots more than there were years ago when I was dealing with acne, as treatments and technology are advancing so quickly. Go see a dermatologist and find a solution that works for you!
