It's a frustrating fact of life that as we get older, we realise that acne isn't simply a stubborn teenage problem - it affect adults, too. And try as we might to clear our complexion, finding an individual cure can often feel like mission impossible.
One woman who passed through the experimentation process and found an effective treatment is Nicola Inger Scruby, a 28-year-old from Brisbane, Australia, who shared the secrets to her skin transformation in a bid to help other women overcome their battles.
The blogger first began to suffer from acne during high school, which progressed to cystic breakouts as she reached adulthood. When she changed her contraceptive pill in her early 20s, Nicola developed raw and painful acne around her chin, jaw and cheeks, which never healed.
Despite exploring a wide range of antibiotics, contraceptive pills, herbal supplements, skin treatments and strict diets, the 28-year-old was unable to find a remedy for her debilitating flare-ups, although she did come to the realisation that her acne could be tackled by understanding her individual triggers.
After visiting six different healthcare professionals, and reading up on the causes of acne, Nicola developed a "five-pronged approach" to her treatment.
Nicola started off with a specific acne dietary protocol created by a dietitian for a period of 28 days. To reduce the inflammation in her body, she removed dairy from her diet and following a low refined carbohydrate diet.
Next up, Nicola spoke to a psychologist about how to reduce stress and anxiety, using a combination of gratitude journaling, deep breathing, morning exercise and group training to overcome her anxiety.
As well as her consultations, Nicola started taking a B5 supplement and a gut health supplement to regulate her bowel movements and improve her IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
It was around the ten day mark after adjusting her diet and controlling her stress levels that Nicola started to notice a difference in her skin, and after six weeks of the formula, there was a total transformation.
Used her newfound knowledge, Nicola created an online program, , to help fellow acne-sufferers better understand their skincare issues.
"I took a five-pronged approach which is now the exact method I use in my online program," she told .
"Now have my hormones and gut health under control, I find eating certain foods don’t trigger a breakout in me anymore."
