When it comes to splashing out on a new designer piece, it can be tricky to navigate the smorgasbord of options.
While it may be tempting to go with your instinct and plump for a bang-on-trend lust-worthy item with which you'll embark upon a fleeting love-affair with, if you're a rare big-spender you might want to opt for something a touch more sensible.
But sensible doesn't necessarily mean boring. Something a little more classic will not only be instantly recognisable, but it will also ultimately be one of the most useful, timeless things you own.

So which pieces in particular?
According to luxury resale destination, , the humble Hermès Birkin will rise in value by over 300% in the next 10 years. "Having increased over 153% over the last 10 years, the value will be almost £50,000 by 2028."
In a similar tale, the value of a Chanel Medium Classic Flap Bag has increased by almost 10% annually... 92% in total over the last 10 years. It's predicted to cost a minimum of £7,000 by 2028.
In comparison, Hewi points out that a Rolls Royce Phantom has only increased 4.4% annually, whilst a detached house has increased by 6%, making a Birkin nearly a 6-times-better investment.

And they're not the only wise buys, with the likes of Valentino, Gucci, Dior & Balenciaga having all experienced peaks in recent years and becoming increasingly strong investment brands.
A small number of jewellery brands also retain their value. Cartier Tank Watches have been reselling for over £45,000 while some Rolex Submariner models have increased in value by over 40% in less than 10 years.
Speaking of the resale phenomenon, Sharon Wolter-Ferguson (founder of Hewi), said: "Chanel and Hermes bags have never, and I don’t see how they ever will, lose their ability to give a girl the feeling she’s made it."
"Someone is always going to want your Chanel or Hermès bag, it’ll never struggle to find a new home, if well cared for and at the right price."
